Sustainable development requires part of the Earths land area to be set aside as protected areas. Such areas, which include National Parks, make important contributions to human society by conserving the natural and cultural heritage for the enjoyment of people and ensuring ecological balance as nations populations increase. In order to assist countries to achieve sustainable stewardship of their National Parks and related protected areas, UNWTO and UNEP have joined forces with the World Conservation Union (IUCN) to publish these guidelines.Park development and management plans for the selection and development of park sites, as well as information on staffing and marketing are included.
